Fólk kunnu so koma í ráðið eftir teimum, ella biðja um at ráðið sendir teimum áritaðu skjølini aftur. Ráðið sendir ikki øðrum myndugleika skjølini.

Avtala tíð: Nøkur fá starvsfólk í Uttanríkis- og mentamálaráðnum hava heimild til at árita skjøl. Hetta verður gjørt yrkadagar í vanligari arbeiðstíð hjá ráðnum. Avgreiðslan tekur bert eina lítla løtu; men fólk eru ikki altíð tøk.

Ring tí á tlf. 358700 at avtala tíð í sambandi við løggilding –  ella send ein t-post til ummr@ummr.fo ella kristjan@ummr.fo. Soleiðis sleppir tú undan at bíða ella koma aftur, tí tá kunnu vit tryggja at eitt starvsfólk er tøkt at gera arbeiðið, tá tú kemur.

Ofta nýtist tær ikki at fáa skjølini áritað hjá føroyskum myndugleika – hettar veldst um í hvørjum landi skjølini skulu brúkast. Umleið 120 lond (í høvuðsheitum í Amerika, alt Europa, India, Suðurafrika og Australia) eru í einum samstarvi, sum ger at tær í flestu førum einans tørvar váttan frá løggildingarskrivstovuni hjá uttanríkismálaráðnum í Danmark.

English translation:

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Culture of the Faroe Islands is authorized to endorse certain Faroese public documents for the purpose of legalization. Only original documents bearing original signatures from ecclesiastical authorities—namely documents issued in an official capacity by parish priests or other employees of the Faroese National Church—may be endorsed by the Ministry.

Copies or digitally generated documents will neither be endorsed nor certified in any other manner.

The Ministry certifies solely that the document in question has been issued by the competent authority. It does not certify the substantive accuracy of the contents of the document.

No administrative fee is charged for this service.

The determining factor as to which government ministry is responsible for endorsing a given document is the authority that issued the document, rather than the legislative area to which the document pertains.

In most cases, the following types of documents issued by the parish priest responsible for church records, or by the parish office responsible for maintaining church registers, are concerned:

  • Marriage certificates (see further details below)

  • Birth and baptismal certificates, as well as naming certificates

  • Transit permits for deceased persons (in cases involving deceased nationals abroad)

With regard to marriage certificates, different procedures apply depending on the authority that performed the marriage ceremony:

  • Marriage certificates issued for church weddings are certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Culture.

  • Marriage certificates issued for civil marriages conducted by a mayor are certified by the Ministry of Finance.

  • Marriage certificates issued for marriages performed within other religious communities or congregations are certified by the Ministry of Finance.

  • Marriage certificates issued for civil marriages conducted by the district commissioner are certified by the Chief Constable / the Faroe Islands Police.

After a document has been endorsed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Culture, the citizen must personally forward the endorsed document to the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Documents may also be submitted to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Culture by post for endorsement (but not by email; original documents are required). Applicants may subsequently collect the endorsed documents in person or request that the Ministry return them by mail. The Ministry does not forward documents to other authorities.

Appointments are required. Only a limited number of staff members at the Ministry are authorized to endorse documents. Endorsements are carried out on working days during the Ministry’s regular office hours. The procedure itself requires only a short time; however, staff members may not always be immediately available.

Applicants are therefore advised to call +298 358700 to arrange an appointment in connection with legalization, or to send an email to ummr@ummr.fo or kristjan@ummr.fo. This ensures that an authorized staff member will be available at the agreed time, thereby avoiding waiting time or the need for a return visit.

In many cases, it is not necessary to have documents endorsed by a Faroese authority. This depends on the country in which the document is to be used. Approximately 120 countries—primarily in the Americas, throughout Europe, as well as India, South Africa, and Australia—participate in a cooperative framework under which, in most cases, certification by the Legalisation Office of the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs alone is sufficient. Nevertheless, it is advisable to make inquiries in advance, for example with the embassy of the country in which the document is to be used.

Further information regarding legalization is available on the website of the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (www.um.dk), including detailed guidance on procedures.

Please note that the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs charges processing and service fees per document. Payment must be made in advance, and proof of payment must be enclosed. Detailed instructions are available on the Ministry’s website.
